I have spent the past few days in the Hudson Valley region of New York taking in some tourist sights that interest me (FDR Museum, Vanderbilt Mansion, U. S. Military Academy to name a few) but, as always, I took the opportunity to run while there. The most interesting run was a 4.5 mile loop which took me out across the Walkway on the Hudson, formerly a 1.25 mile long railroad bridge which connects both sides of the Hudson in Poughkeepsie. The walkway is 212 feet above the Hudson River and literally left this old acrophobic weak in the knees. The return across the Roosevelt bridge was also intimidating as the running surface was narrower, the guard rail shorter, and the bridge construction allowed for a view directly below the span to the water's surface. You may never have the chance to run here (unless you visit Vasser or Marist Colleges) but if you do, it is memorable . . .
