In yesterday's heat I looked for a flat, shady trail to run and headed to Wompatuck State Park in Hingham. Along the trail I met up with Coach Jewett of Hingham who was cycling with his grandson. After 4 miles in the late morning humidity I was all too happy to stop and chat. Of course the conversation included a preview of the XC season. Coach Jewett, the consummate gentleman and MSTCA Hall of Fame Coach, expressed confidence in his team for the upcoming season. No surprise there, he's coached great teams for a long time. He has every reason to believe he and his teams will sail through the Keenan Division on the way to a first place finish. On the other hand, I have every reason to believe that when it's over Whitman-Hanson will prevail. I've seen members of Coach Jewett's teams running the hills at both Wompatuck and World's End this summer, and I am hopeful you are all preparing just as hard. THREE MONTHS FROM YESTERDAY (October 20) we will find out! Cross Country is unique in it's preparation. I vividly recall preparing for other sports while I was in high school. After a week of two-a-day practices in football, we were ready to go. In baseball it was simply a matter of throwing for 4-5 days to get your arm prepared. Cross Country, on the other hand, takes months of build up in order to perform to your potential. This PREPARATION IS THE KEY to your success this season. YOU have to work harder than the other guys. It's that simple.
Again, the Hingham meet is three months from my meeting up with Coach Jewett yesterday. Coincidentally, the END of your XC season is four months from TODAY. The All-State meet will be held November 21st. Will YOU be there??
PS: Thinking about this evening's Core Training . . . What do you think about this routine, Bryce? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDNOZCoBFqg
