Summer running can be painful under many circumstances, but it should not be as a result of inappropriate clothing selections. The object is to stay cool and stay comfortable while you're putting in those miles. But, if you like cotton, there is always Bag Balm!

WHAT TO WEAR?
One young runner told me the other day that he was chafed from head to toe after running on a very hot and humid day. And while I have not experienced this problem in a quarter century, I had some advice for him on how I have avoided it over the years. "Friction is the root cause of your problem," I said, and I told him to purchase a tin of Bag Balm. The product is manufactured in Vermont and I have used it for years to reduce the friction that occurs on my feet, legs and torso while running. I've recommended it many times, and even recently suggested to a friend undergoing radiation therapy that she use it to relieve some of the side effects of her treatments.
I think what I like best about the product is that, unlike me, it won't "wilt" in the heat. But nothing is quite as simple as I may imply. The chafed young man ran with no socks and a cotton t-shirt, and shorts that were tight at the thigh. Not exactly dressed for comfort. Socks are essential to comfortable running. I purchase the same type of socks on a regular basis. Man made material such as polyester, will keep your feet dry. Cotton tends to retain moisture and often results in blistering which, as some you may know, can be very painful and distracting. My socks are lightly padded in the heel and at the ball of the foot for increased comfort. Shorts and shirts should also be made of man made materials and be loose fitting and light colored. Some materials identified as Cool-Max or Dri-Fit actually absorb, or wick, the moisture from your body which then evaporates, leaving your skin cooler. During these hot summer days light colored clothing will reflect, rather than absorb, the heat.
Summer running can be painful under many circumstances, but it should not be as a result of inappropriate clothing selections. The object is to stay cool and stay comfortable while you're putting in those miles. But, if you like cotton, there is always Bag Balm!
