Yesterday's practice went well I think. I'll admit to being mildly disappointed with the numbers (13 Girls, 23 Boys) but I am hopeful we'll pick up some new athletes in the days to come. Following practice yesterday I saw two girls running separately from the school (each was motoring) and my thought went to Mr. Rodgers suggestion we seek out kids who may wish to participate but might require some prodding. Prod, by all means. Obviously soccer, volleyball and field hockey cut into the number of potential candidates. This along with the work required in our sport no doubt deters some of them. But, as you know, if we can get kids started, we can get them hooked. Please get out there and recruit.
I collected and analyzed 8 summer training logs yesterday. Thank you to those who turned them in. They revealed the obvious. . . those that ran short distances 2-3 times per week turned early in yesterday's run, while those that ran 5-6 days with longer miles completed the 50 minute run. What was not so obvious (or anticipated) was that 3 of the 6 who ran longer and more often during the summer experienced either fatigue or injury. In one case, I would attribute injury to two weeks during which the athlete ran high mileage 7 days per week which proved counterproductive. In another I would attribute the fatigue to inexperience as a distance runner. Remember we want a slow, gradual buildup. This is a factor in the way we will conduct early season practices. Some of you are ready to go 50 minutes, others are not just yet. None of you are, or are expected to be, race ready at this point. Accordingly, today's plan for practice will be the same as yesterday's.
