WEEK #7; DON'T PANIC (Anxiety is OK) ; ATHLETIC FIRST NIGHT

Week # 7 August 2 – August 8 (27 – 40 Miles)

This week the experienced runners and those at the higher end of the scale will have TWO long runs, preferably on soft surfaces. Space these runs out so your day off and a couple of easy days fall in between them. Take it very easy on your recovery runs this week, you will probably feel fatigued. If you are not ready for this don’t worry; just do the one long run as you have been doing. Don’t break up a long run into two sessions. The purpose of the long runs is to develop cardio/pulmonary efficiency.

I can't believe how quickly these weeks are passing.  My summer training is going very well as I am hoping to keep up with some of you during practice this season.  I won't panic because I am confident I can maintain a pace with some of the team (albeit a smaller number than in years past) but there is some anxiety on my part thinking about the possibility of straggling behind all of you and calling for a ride back to the Track.  I also think it may be time for some of our team to start feeling as I do.  That is, don't panic, you have time to get some miles under your belt and move beyond the pain which accompanies the start of a training program.  But, if you have not started yet, there should be some eagerness (my definition of anxiety) to get going.  Week 7's plan is really for those of you who have been through the first 6 weeks of the plan and is not intended for the novice or the late starter.  Be careful, be safe.  It is is important that you start at the beginning.  Look back on the plan that was handed out at our meeting, or scroll down through the older posts to find the plan for the week in which you are now training.  The truth is, somebody will join the team in August with no experience whatsoever and will be behind you in the preparation phase of training.  But don't use that as a reason or excuse to delay any longer.  Get out and put in the effort.  It will pay off!  Guaranteed!
Just a note to let you know Athletic First Night will be held on Sunday, August 23 at 5:30 (5:00PM for Freshmen.)  It is important that ALL attend.  Don't use the excuse these meetings are repetitive or boring (nobody knows that better than me, I attended no fewer than 36 similar meetings as a parent.)  Plan ahead and get there and bring a parent/guardian.  We feel these sessions are informative and instructional and that everybody will get something out of it.  See you there!
