I find myself focusing on what I must improve upon to make this a successful and rewarding season for each and every athlete. After all I've spent most of the summer telling others how they can improve their performances. Introspection, or looking at oneself in the mirror, can make all of us better at what we do . . . I'm no exception. I've created a short, but not an exhaustive or all-inclusive list for myself to which I welcome additions . . .
1. Try to do a better job with times and statistics, keeping in mind every athlete's times and splits are important to them.
2. Not only be punctual, but early to away meets . . . leading by example while at the same time giving the team the opportunity to view and feel comfortable with each course.
3. Be able to say, "Do as I do, not just as I say." Be willing and ready to take on the same challenges presented to team members.
4. Be more pro-active with injured runners. Follow up more often with the athlete and parents.
5. Be more active in recruitment. Put a greater emphasis on getting the middle school athletes involved in our program.
6. Keep team rules at a minimum. Keep in mind XC athletes are not only intelligent but disciplined.
7. Mix up workouts more effectively and seek opportunities to run different routes.
8. Encourage communication and be a better listener. Not only keep the door open but seek out concerns and opinions of team members.
9. Encourage parents to be more involved.
10. Always remember, it is not about ME!
Well, that's a start. I have my work cut out for me. If you can diplomatically offer more suggestions for improvement, I will be happy to hear from you at any time during the season. (Which I guess speaks to #8.) And while I have never claimed to be perfect, I make an attempt at it each and every day! (Perhaps #3!)
Hope to see everybody at Athletic First Night in the PAC tomorrow (Sunday, 8/23 at 5:30, 5:00 for incoming Freshmen.)
