A WORD ON DOWNHILL RUNNING; ALACTIC ENERGY SYSTEM

Yesterday's workout was encouraging.  Every one who participated exceeded expectations. If you are experiencing some DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, discussed in a previous Blog entry) that is to be expected.  While running downhill generally feels easier, and is less taxing on the metabolic and cardiovascular systems than level or uphill running, it subjects the tissues of the lower extremities to significantly more strain. The specific nature of the strain imposed by downhill running is called eccentric loading. One consequence of the strain of running downhill is it limits performance and causes fatigue to occur more quickly in runners who are unaccustomed to downhill running.  Fortunately, practicing downhill running greatly increases fatigue resistance and eccentric loading tolerance in subsequent downhill runs. In fact, a single downhill run that is extreme enough to cause soreness provides a protective effect that lasts up to two months.

Following our workout yesterday we discussed briefly the alactic energy system.  The following link will access a great article on the subject.  Following today's 4 Mile Easy pace run we will switch things up a bit, foregoing strides and practicing some race starts.

2:30, on the Track . . . see you there.
