Patriot League Year End Coaches Meeting

The Patriot League coaches met last evening at Pembroke High School to discuss league matters including next year's scheduling (which may add a season opening jamboree event), All-Star voting and to decide the fate of this year's League Championship meet which was jeopardized by the weather forecast of an upcoming stormy Saturday.

First, you may be happy to hear the League Championship Meet will take place on Tuesday, October 30, at 3:00PM at Pembroke High School.  JV and Varsity Boys and Girls races will be held.  ALL qualifying athletes (that is, those with 5k times of less than 30:00) will be entered and are expected to attend.  Honestly, I was deeply troubled by the talk at practice yesterday that some of you decided to end your season following the Plymouth South meet and sit out the League meet.  I will be candid, as I sometimes am to a fault . . . if you choose to quit now, I'm OK with that, just don't list Cross Country 2018 as an activity on your college applications.  You won't get credit.  For me anyway, there are 8 deadly sins.  You can add "quitting" to the list you may already be familiar with.  End of discussion . . .

A reminder that (1) today at 3:45 is the Whitman Middle School meet and I'm hoping that those able to do so will head over there to help out, and (2) Saturday, the Freaky 5K is being run, "rain or shine" and we are committed to maintaining a water stop on Holly Ridge Drive between 9:30 and 11:00 . . . "rain or shine."  Of course, those who run in the event are exempt!!  The race begins and ends at Damien's Restaurant in Hanson and starts at precisely 10:00AM.  If you are entering you'll want to arrive earlier to get a bib number and claim your shirt.  Refreshments are available to runners following the race.

Finally, the Patriot League has a method of selecting its All-Stars.  Teams nominate candidates and then a point system determines selectees.  Each nominee is assigned points for Keenan Division opponents who finish ahead of them.  For example, Hingham girls placed 4 runners ahead of nominee Tori Boss.  Tori is assessed 4 points.  Points for each nominee are totaled and the 7 athletes with the fewest points are All-Stars.  An additional 5 All-Stars are selected through the League Meet results by taking the top 5 finishers who have not already been selected through the point method.  It is important to note, that not running versus a division opponent results in assessment of 7 points.  A couple of extraordinary runners were not selected as a result of this rule.  The bottom line . . . Whitman-Hanson did not have an All-Star selected last evening.  However, the possibility of being selected by running a great League meet should motivate some of you.   League MVPs were Friend Weiler of Duxbury for the Boys and Caroline Johannes from Hingham for the girls.  Each received our vote.  Both are tremendous athletes and are deserving recipients.

See you ALL at 2:30.
