At this point I have to assume Dorian will be hundreds of miles out to sea and the Invitational will be held as scheduled September 7. We have 46 athletes (19 Girls, 27 Boys) entered into the races. A roster was posted at practice today (Monday) and will be there tomorrow for all to see. I've reserved spots on the ferry for each of the student athletes and the two coaches who will be attending (Coach Kim Coletti and myself.)
The itinerary is as follows:
6:15AM A single bus departs WHRHS (leaving from the gym area) to Woods Hole (6:15 SHARP)
7:30AM Arrival at Woods Hole
8:15AM Ferry departs for a 45 minute trip to Vineyard Haven
9:00AM Ferry arrives at Vineyard Haven and bus transportation to Martha's Vineyard High School
By 9:30 the student-athletes should be settled in and we will tour the course prior to the races which are scheduled as follows:
11:00AM 3K Freshmen Coed
11:30AM 5K JV Girls
12:15PM 5K JV Boys
12:45PM 5K Varsity Girls (limited to 7 runners)
1:15PM 5K Varsity Boys (limited to 7 runners)
Assignments to each race will be announced no later than Thursday, September 5th at practice. Following the final race on Saturday the athletes will be taken by school bus to Oak Bluffs, arriving at approximately 2:00. Mrs. Coletti and I will remain in the center of the small town while the students enjoy the shops/sights. The athletes are expected to stay within the vicinity of the business/commercial area. The Ferry back to Woods Hole is located within sight of the center of Oaks Bluff. The athletes will be advised to return to the Ferry to allow plenty of boarding time.
5:20PM Ferry departs Oak Bluffs for 45 minute trip to Woods Hole
6:05PM Ferry arrives at Woods Hole and the return bus to WHRHS
7:15PM Approximate arrival back at WHRHS
Important items to bring (it may sound silly, but . . .) Uniform, Running Shoes (FYI - this is a course suitable for spikes if you wear them), jacket (it can get cool this time of year on the water), dry clothing to wear following the races, extra socks (they get wet), money for food and anything else the athletes want to purchase (many kids bring food on the bus or purchase something on the ferry, all purchase food in Oak Bluffs), sun screen, bug spray. Phones should be charged prior to departure. The athletes have my cell phone number and I invite them to share it with you (if you call or text I will get back to you as soon as possible.)
If parents plan to attend the meet it is important to note they are not allowed to take either the WHRHS bus on the mainland or the Martha's Vineyard school bus to the High School. There is extremely limited parking in Woods Hole. Ferry parking and shuttle service is available from Falmouth. It is also important to note I can only obtain the group rate for the team and coaches for the Ferry. All transportation for the parents are arranged by themselves. Team members must accompany the team to the meet but can accompany their parents home from Woods Hole if they have spoken with Mrs. Coletti or myself. PLEASE PLAN AHEAD.
I'll be providing more information as appropriate and certainly welcome any questions, comments, or concerns of any student or parent/guardian.
