Week #2 - 2021 Cross Country

The heat and humidity, along with potential thunderstorms, return as we begin week two at 2:30 Monday afternoon.  On Friday, we discussed appropriate clothing for the hotter weather and I hope to see a lot of dri-fit shorts/shirts today. Saturday's well attended long-run on the Hanover Bike Trail was completed under ideal conditions for this time of year.  We were pleasantly surprised that nearly all those in attendance completed the entire out and back, 5.3 mile route and looked good doing it.  A number of new runners in fact made it all the way. Those participating now realize that not all the running we do is in the sun and heat and that as the season progresses running become more comfortable and more conducive to improvement.  

Saturday's run, the Time Trial, and the overall performance during the first week of practice have provided enough data to form our running groups.  We will make that announcement at practice later today.  It breaks down into 20 Boys and Girls in Group 1, with 15 in both Group 2 and Group 3.  Assignments are based entirely on your CURRENT conditioning and perceived ability.  If anybody feels they belong in another group please speak with me at practice.  Group 1 will work with Coach George.  Group 2 with Coach Coletti, and Group 3 With Coach S.  The groups are dynamic, in that they will be changed at regular intervals, generally at the end of each week and following each meet thereafter.  Our hope is that all of you will continue to improve, everybody breaks into Group 1, and the entire coaching staff ultimately works with a large group of outstanding runners.  In the meantime however, you'll only be asked to do what we feel you can tolerate given your present level of conditioning.  It's a long season.  Work hard to improve and you'll move up.  For sure.


Training paces will be provided to Group 1 athletes today which will be doing its initial "workout" of the season.  Nothing grueling, but a bit of up tempo/intervals/repeats to ignite those fast twitch muscles.  Group 2 will work some pick-ups/surges into their easy run today and hit the weight room.  Coach S has a plan for Group 3 and will have that for you at practice.  

It is supremely important that all of you remember, WE ARE ONE TEAM!  Boys, Girls, Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors.  While there may be a difference in the way the groups train, we are all working with the same purposes.  Making you better athletes, helping you achieve your goals, and making sure we all have fun doing it.
