There has been a "method to the madness." By now those who did not train during the summer can see the issues that accompany a lack of preparation (pain, injury, prolonged walking, slow times, etc.) and can appreciate the success of those teammates who worked hard during June, July and August getting ready for the season. Anticipating there would be these various levels of conditioning allowed us to schedule two early season invitationals for those ready to take them on, and allow for a couple of Saturdays off for those who aren't quite there yet. Tomorrow, 14 runners will head out to Hampshire College for the Amherst Invitational. (The itinerary is posted in a previous entry.) Those not attending are expected to run on their own for 30 minutes on either Saturday or Sunday, with one day off. We will all get back to work on Monday. In the meantime . . .
Today, BOTH groups will meet on the Track at 10:30. All runners will go 25 minutes at E(asy) Pace, followed up with strides and stretching.
Our focus now turns toward improvement. Yes, IMPROVEMENT. You all have something on which to build whether you are one of the top runners in the State or unable to maintain an easy pace for 30 minutes. In keeping with that theme, game balls went out yesterday to two runners who have shown enormous improvement this season and are among our top runners. Julia Cosgrave has become a top 5 runner this season and just this week improved her race time over last week by over a minute, and her pace by :25 per mile!! Andrew Newman, who improved during last season to run a 20:00 5k, spent this summer training hard and is now one of our best runners and is making an impact on a very talented Boys team. Julia and Andrew provide two terrific examples of athletes willing to do whatever it takes to succeed!
