Every morning I tune in to Channel 5 to get the weather report from Meteorologist Cindy Fitzgibbon. My interest is dictated primarily by my running, and during the fall, your running as well. Yesterday, I got my run in between 9:00 and 10:00 and despite the heat and humidity it felt great after my day off. Today will be another scorcher, 15-20 degrees above the average temperature for early September. Cindy tells me we are in the middle of a "heatwave," i.e three consecutive days of 90+. So, I've got a dilemma. We can go short and easy today as planned. Perhaps we'll focus on core training more than usual. But what to do about tomorrow's race? Keep in mind, your safety, and the safety of the Middleboro runners is the most important determinant.
With the foregoing in mind I think the most prudent course of action is to shorten our course to 2.5 miles (for this meet only) and offer an even shorter course for those who have only recently begun running. For our experienced runners, the plan maintains the competition they are looking for. Our less experienced runners have not yet run for the two weeks necessary to acclimate their bodies to exertion in the heat. That said, the proposed modified course for Wednesday looks like that found at the following link:
http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=568632
You'll have to cut and paste the link in order to access it. But briefly, it creates a 1.5 mile course for those not ready to run the 2.5 mile course.
Today's practice will take place on the modified course:
RED GROUP: 25 minutes @ E pace, strides, core, stretch
BLACK GROUP: 35 minutes @ E pace, strides, core, stretch
