D2 Track & Field Championship

My summary, as submitted to the Athletic Director, Mr. Rodgers, follows:

The Eastern Massachusetts Division 2 Girls Track & Field Championship was held at Norwell High School with Whitman-Hanson finishing 21st in a 38 team field.  Senior Captain Samantha Coletti won the 2 Mile in a personal best time of 10:58 and will move on to the All-State Meet to be held at Westfield State College June 4.  Senior Captain Abbie Newman also ran a personal best in the mile with a time of 5:27, finishing 9th overall.  Also performing well for the Panthers were Lillian Perkins-Reisdorf (400, 4 x 100 and 4 x 400) and Lily Nolan (100, 200 a 4 x 100) who each qualified for three events.

One of the goals in every season is to have our athletes peak at Championship time.  Three of our Seniors did just that yesterday.  In addition to Samantha and Abbie, Patrick Duffey ran his personal best in the 800 with a time of 2:00.67.  Of one thing I am certain. These Seniors, each of whom plans to run at the collegiate level, will improve upon what they've accomplished thus far.  As they get older and stronger they will be able to train harder and establish new goals.  So while they have had remarkable results at the high school level, their best is yet to come!

For those who will be back next year, we have a lot of young talent, which was clearly evident at yesterday's meet as well as during the final weeks of the season.  I am excited about the future.  Many of the younger athletes have had the opportunity to work with Coach Berens, who I am grateful to have on the Girl's staff. She is planning to return next year during all three seasons (XC, Indoor and Outdoor Track) and she will help you, and I, finish what we've started.

I will be speaking with Coach Driscoll in the next few days regarding a year end banquet.  I know we will be having one . . . awards are in the works!

Thank you all for a great season thus far.  Yes, thus far.  Samantha, Dorothy D., and Ally B. will be competing in the two-day Heptathlon next week at Norwell High School.  They have signed on for an additional week of practice, but that is a small price to pay for bragging rights with their grandchildren many years from now!

More coming soon . . . stay tuned.
