Coach Richardson, Coach Berens and I, along with Jack Ryan, Julia Cosgrave and Nicole Norve had a nice meeting with incoming Freshman at the Whitman Middle School yesterday. The youngsters are excited about coming to WHRHS and we added about 30 potential athletes to our XC roster. Even more have expressed interest in our Track & Field programs following a Fall season in another sport. I am cautiously optimistic because plans often change over the summer months between Junior High and High School, but I am hopeful the kids will give us some serious consideration. Most bring some experience with them having been involved in the Middle School XC and Track programs. Ms. Costa is a terrific coach as many of you know, and skillfully inspires her student-athletes. Ms. Costa is a blessing to the High School program through her work.
The recruiting continues however. XC must compete with Football, Soccer, Volleyball, Field Hockey and Golf for participants. Without fanfare you go about your work quietly, in relative anonymity, in a demanding sport, but the rewards are significant. Those rewards often involve achieving goals. More will be forthcoming concerning team and individual goals, but it is never too early to start thinking about what you hope to accomplish this year. Whether it is simply completing a 5k or getting under 17:00 at EMass, find something that will motivate you to give it your all and do your best.
Stay cool . . .
