Tuesday - June 14, 2016

Two items on the calendar today . . . a pre-season XC meeting in the Library following classes for anybody who was unable to attend our meeting last week, and the initial Captains Council meeting for 2016-2017 Captains which takes place in the Library at 1:50.

Classes end soon and options for your daily run coincidentally improve.  For many months you have been running most often in the late afternoon.  Generally, this is the warmest point in the day, which is tremendously beneficial during the Indoor season, but not ideal during the other three seasons (Summer, XC, and Outdoor.)  Last summer, after years of suggesting to high school athletes they get their summer training run completed early in the day, I changed up my summer running time and would get out most mornings. Honestly, I simply enjoyed it more and got out many days before the sun rose.  But there are some real benefits to morning running (taken from the Nutra Check blog site) which follow below.  I vividly recall several years ago, prior to my coming to Whitman-Hanson, I would see the XC girls out running in the early morning as a team.  Abby and Rachel Baker, who most area coaches knew, led the way and were among the 6-8+ girls on the roads most mornings.  I'm fairly certain those training runs were a major factor in the success the team enjoyed during those years. Your time is now.  You're going to get out there at some point today, why not try running earlier?  You may, like myself, find it simply more enjoyable.

The Benefits are. . .

Avoiding air pollution, which climbs as more cars hit the road
Missing the heat of the day or evening in the summer
Early mornings are often a quiet time with fewer people on the road or in the gym
Can lead to clearer thinking and increased energy levels during daytime activities
A positive start to the day will inspire you to keep up the good work and eat well
You won't need an additional shower during the middle of the day

Hope to see you "on the road."
