Looking ahead . . .

Cross Country practices will start on Thursday, August 25th this year.  The practice schedule is as follows:

Thursday 8/25 @ 4:00PM
Friday 8/26 @ 4:00PM
Saturday 8/27 @ 9:00AM
Monday 8/29 @ 4:00PM
Tuesday 8/30 @ 4:00PM
Wednesday 8/31 @ 2:30PM (return to classes)
We have switched to a 4:00 start in order avoid the mid-day heat we've experienced the past two years with an earlier starting time.  You should however be prepared for warmer temperatures.  In addition to good running shoes, lightweight clothing is suggested.
I am becoming increasingly aware of how difficult it is to attract student athletes to our sport.  I met with about 40 kids at the WHRHS Enrichment Program in the hope of starting them on a 5K training program but got no takers.  I will never resort to "raiding" other teams, and there are a number of them.  Field Hockey, Volleyball, and Golf offer what we don't (summers off.)  Football, Soccer and Cheerleading are sports many kids grow up in.  Understandably many see it through even when playing time is diminished or it stops being fun.  I will again ask Administration if I can start a "Couch to 5K" class after school three days per week.  Beyond that, the best ways to draw people to running are (1) Word of mouth.  YOU must let people know about what you do, and (2) Success.  If you can achieve individual success, team success follows.  I am looking for 7 Boys and 7 Girls to lead the way.  I am hoping that everyone of the 7 has to constantly look over his/her shoulder to see a teammate or two ready to overtake them.  I anticipate creating training groups on Day 1 of practice.  Where will you fit in?
47 days to our first Dual Meet of the season at North Quincy . . .
