Excellent practice today kids . . . I am hearing fewer and fewer groans when we convene for Strength & Conditioning and Abs. We may generate a few more however when we enter a new phase of our training on Wednesday. For two plus weeks we have been focusing, for the most part, on building endurance and strength for some of you, just base building for others. Everybody is ready to take it up just a bit and we will do that following our meet versus Hanover. You'll note there have been no major injuries up to this point, just the usual discomfort and mild pain that accompanies the change to (or perhaps the start of) your exercise regimen. You will be asked to run harder and ran farther than you have thus far. The running will be accompanied by various strength routines designed specifically to reduce the likelihood of an injury to you, the runner. It works. Your results will improve and you will become stronger. It will never, nor should it ever, become easy. But you will find yourself becoming a better, stronger athlete, ready and willing to meet challenges. I am certain some of you already have surprised yourselves.
At practice today we announced the practice players of the week . . . Kaitlyn Daly who has (quietly) improved in this past year. The coaches were impressed with her workout on Friday following a good race in Quincy. Tucker Sylvester, who is a member of the Track & Field team (with a focus on FIELD) had to sit out the meet on Wednesday, but absolutely killed the 5 mile run on Friday. Game balls for the Martha's Vineyard meet went to Joe Coletti, who ran a brilliant 3rd mile and is ready to extend that effort hoping to lock in a spot in the Top 7. For the Girls it was Victoria Carleton, just a Freshman, who has made it clear she intends to be at EMass with the upperclassmen after finishing just seconds behind them in her 5K at M/V.
But keep in mind there is always space at the top. The stop watch is the great equalizer and ultimate determinant in who moves on to the Invitationals and EMass. Hard work may get YOU there. Stick with it . . . it can happen.
Hydrate. Rest. Eat properly always, but especially between 6:00 this evening and race time tomorrow. We will see you all in uniform at 3:00PM on the Track. Be there . . .
