No Rest for the Weary . . . 9/8/17

First, a postscript on yesterday's races.  Our course is challenging.  Actually it is difficult and demanding. Times yesterday for all the runners may reflect the terrain changes and long uphill which the new course forces runners to confront.  As for the team results, we were confident the Boys would win but were unaware of a talented Freshman opponent.  But placing in 12 of the top 15 places speaks for itself.  Great job by the W-H men.  Quincy/North Quincy has a successful summer running club program (not connected with the schools.)  It was obvious the Q/NQ girls were in mid-season shape.  Having several Freshman standouts doesn't hurt either.  They are young AND talented!  We knew our ladies would have to run their best to win. No shame in the loss, our best is yet to come.  Congratulations to Q/NQ  on a well deserved win.

On the subject of Freshmen, I neglected to announce last week's Practice Players of the Week.  Liam Cafferty and Theo Kamperides, who both ran outstanding races yesterday, can attribute their early success to their work ethic.  For example, last week on an out and back to the Town Park, they had the option of returning up Franklin Street or following some of our more experienced runners who chose to extend their run up Winter.  Liam and Theo followed the veterans, something they've been doing at each practice.  Practice makes perfect and their results (Liam - 4th for W-H yesterday, Theo - 6th) reflect that.  Great job by the young'uns.

Continuing with the "Freshmen" theme.  Other than continue a new cycle of novenas, I don't know how to contend with the fact our Girls Freshman Soccer team has 25 athletes, Volleyball has 20, and Field Hockey has 24.  That's 25, 20 and 24 more than we have.  Q/NQ may be on to something with the summer running club.

Today's title by the way may be a tad deceptive.  Today will be a shakeout run with games to follow.  Those not headed to the Martha's Vineyard Invitational will have two days to rest up.  The "weary" . . . those headed to the MVI, will take Sunday off with another shakeout on Monday.  Tuesday we head to Scituate to face an improved Sailor team.

See you at 2:30.
