47 degrees as this goes to press . . . Distance/Mid-Distance are outside today!!!!
Last night was a good night on several levels. First, while both teams lost to a talented Plymouth North team, there were some outstanding performances. Certainly, Jack Ryan's come from behind win, Joe Coletti's kick, Nicole Norve's hammer dropping victory and Andrew Newman's qualifier in the two-mile, standout. But it felt good to get back to competition. And after weeks of very cold weather we get a break from it over the next few days. If I owned a bus I'd take all you distance kids on a road trip to run one of my favorite winter runs, the BAA Marathon course - Newton Lower Falls to Boston College and return. A 9 mile out and back, all in the warm sun, most on an access road which parallels Commonwealth Avenue with little, if any, traffic. You'd enjoy Heartbreak Hill, the peak of which is the turnaround point.
At yesterday's meet I also got to visit with a former athlete whose brother is a member of the Hingham team. I was very happy to hear that she along with the other two Captains of my 2010 XC team will all be running this year's Boston Marathon! I hope I have the opportunity to see some of you run it in the years to come!
Continuing with my Boston Marathon theme, I vividly recall watching Sara Edwards and Bob Lobell interviewing some of the "more important" participants in the 1982 Boston Marathon on the Hopkinton Town Common near the starting line. The #1 song at the time was Toto's "Won't Hold you Back" which was blaring in the background. I've listened to that song no fewer than 6 time today! OK, sorry for "old guy" stuff, you'll have your Taylor Swift or Bruno Mars moment years from now.
