It's been a while . . .

Time for reflection, time for  preparing, any task is better completed with a well thought out plan.  The plan however hit an immediate roadblock on the first day of practice:

To quote former Patriot coach Bill Parcells, "It is what it is."  So yesterday's practice was not how we had planned it, but we made the best of it.  I'm not certain how many Boys were in attendance.  There were 46 Girls participating.  A quick look at the talent on the team offers some optimism.  Those in attendance included 15 Freshmen, 15 Sophomores, 11 Juniors, and 5 Seniors.  It would appear the 12th grade students may have a case of "Senioritis" resulting in lower numbers for the class, but those that were there are all contributors and we're happy to have them.  We were very happy to welcome back Coach Dawn Berens and Coach Jen Scarpelli along with a newcomer to coaching, but a familiar name to anybody who has followed W-H Track & Field over the years, Samantha Richner.  I am very grateful for their commitment to our program.

We are still hoping to increase our numbers and if you have a friend or classmate who you feel may be interested, whether he/she has been cut from another sport, may have an interest in being active and getting fit while enjoying themselves, or is heading home to Twinkies and Mountain Dew every afternoon, we would love to have them.  After a lifetime of running I can tell you with certainty, this sport has provided me with unimaginable thrills through the years and about the only change I would make to my past is to have started running sooner.

Today, D/MD athletes will be running sooner, for sure.  You'll be running some hills today with Coach Berens group headed to Orchard, Coach George's group to Holly Ridge following warm up indoors.  We will be working on hurdles, throws and jumping during the second half of practice, before finishing with core work and stretching and heading home to warm up our snow blowers for tomorrow's snowfall.  With warm spring days in the offing, "now is the winter of our discontent."  Things will improve.  In the meantime enjoy the cool weather, you'll look back on these days as comfortable once the heat arrives.  See you at 2:30.
