paraskevidekatriaphobia

Google it!

But don't worry about it.

Today should be a great day for training.

Last evening, despite some communication problems, there was a nice turnout for core training.  I'm somewhat optimistic because we have at least five new girls on the team, each of whom has experience and talent and will be vying for spots in our top 7.  At this point, nothing is cast in stone, but preparation will be the key.   Don't be left out.  On the boys side there is room at the top as well.  Sure, the picture may be slightly clearer for the men, but again, those ready will be challenged right out of the gate at Martha's Vineyard.  The unfortunate thing with the boys is that I am well aware of the potential of some of the athletes, but also acutely attuned to the fact they have "better things to do."  Strength and conditioning on Tuesdays and Thursday may be optional, but summer training is NOT.  If you choose to start running August 23rd you will be disappointed, its that simple.  You will be the kid who shows up on exam day having never opened the textbook.

The Seniors who have been on the team for the past 3 years may have noticed that I have followed the same in-season training routine each year.  This year I am changing things.  No dramatic changes but smaller groups, more emphasis on new workouts and longer runs, and hopefully more opportunities to run invitationals for those seeking additional challenges.  Our sport is constantly evolving and those unwilling to change with it are destined for failure.  I won't fall into that abyss without a knock-down, drag-out fight.

I've tried to find out our schedule for the fall, but none of our meets have been posted other than the meet at Duxbury on September 18.  Duxbury has graduated a lot of boys but will be very competitive.  Nearly all the girls are back and they will be a formidable challenge. What more motivation do you need to get going?

I was asked by one of our athletes last week about the pros and cons of running on a treadmill.  My short reply was that treadmill running is a great, occasional alternative to outdoor running.  Of course, there are no weather, temperature or terrain issues, bathrooms are nearby, you have a soft running surface and you can be entertained by the tv as you run.  But thinking back to the days when I ran countless miles at Wompatuck State Park with friends, I had no concern for the weather, there were adequate rest rooms, the surface was actually softer than a treadmill and my company kept me entertained.  Brandon and Trevor reported that they ran a tempo run at Burrage Pond the other evening.  Can't do that on Dad's treadmill in the basement!  Add to that the sheer boredom of treadmill running, the adverse impact on your biomechanics, and the simple fact you compete outdoors and you'd have to agree running outside is the far better option.

So get going.  You should be a month into your training by now.  For some of you it is time to run that 5K test and see what your state of conditioning is currently.  It will go a long way in helping you know where you want to be in another 5 weeks.

Have a great weekend!
