Published Post #655

I guess I've been doing this blog for a time, heh?  Comments? Questions?    While Coach S may be in Switzerland, either adding to or subtracting from those secret Swiss bank accounts, his influence remains stateside.  For example, we will be incorporating some of his ideas into our Wednesday evening program, which continues, by the way, this week.  Again we are calling on our XC and T&F athletes to provide a helping hand in the program.  (All net proceeds will go to our T&F and XC program, much of our equipment and facility need updates!)  But Coach S also suggested it might be interesting to include a post about a runner or two who may have dramatically impacted our sport.

Only a couple of weeks ago an influential long distance runner passed away at 73.  Donald Ritchie, once quoted as saying, "Each time I ended a run I had plenty left inside me, so I entered longer and longer races," had retired from running at 66 years of age.  His extremely interesting story can be found at the flowing link:

I'm currently reading a book titled "Unbroken" which has as one of it's several themes, running.  In it reference is made to an incredibly inspirational (and influential with respect to the main character in the non-fiction book) athlete named Glenn Cunningham.  His incredible story is briefly presented at the following link:

If you found those items interesting, why not begin your own story today.  On Sunday I suggested to my grandson, who is only 11, that he may be better suited to running than football which he intends to continue playing in the fall.  I asked him to challenge himself for 12 minutes.  Not a difficult task for an active youngster.  He surprised me by going 1.56 miles at a steady 7:40 pace and claims to have enjoyed it.  When I asked him yesterday (Monday) how his legs felt his response was "Great!"  Now if he can do that, anybody within earshot of WHRHS can as well.  Why not throw out the challenge to your friends or classmates.  12 minutes.  Right now, that's all I want!

Core at four!  Hope to see you there!
