Fun (In the Rain) Friday, September 28, 2018

I keep a small library of books at my office which I occasionally look to for direction or inspiration.  Many of the books, as you might imagine, relate to running and fitness.  Today, for no particular reason I took down "The Quotable Runner" which still, after 25 years, provides "great moments of wisdom and inspiration" as promised on its cover. I found two items I highlighted some time ago..

The first, the Dedication, made to the author's Father, who "taught him to run", his Mother, who "taught him to write" and a wife who "supports him in both.  The dedication obviously served as a reminder how lucky I am that Mrs. Coach has supported me all these years in both my running and working with runners.

The second highlighted excerpt was the author's description of what a great distance running coach should be, "Someone who helps you improve but leaves something "in the bank," and also instills love of the sport as you move on.  Plus, one hopes, someone who teaches you something about life in the process."  I remain extremely grateful for the opportunity to continue trying to do just that as well as the support that provides the opportunity.

While some things may remain constant, our training plan is not one.  There have been changes made this year which have had positive results thus far.  More miles and slower paces are just a couple.  Today, my group will see another as we head out in the rain and do repeats on the grass.  If it is raining at 2:30 we can warm up indoors, but it will be 60 degrees and the rain shouldn't deter us from getting a workout in.

Tomorrow, we will practice at WHRHS at 9:00.  Many of you want to participate in the Miles for Meals 5K to benefit local food pantries.  Some of you were even willing to pay for an entry and not participate, opting instead to head to an off-site long run to maintain your records of perfect attendance.  We've decided to run at WHRHS and I'm encouraging all of you to run the 5K and extend your run following completion.  Those not involved with the 5K will be running easy on school grounds then cheering on their teammates.
