10 days and a wake-up

In the military, you often hear a short-timer use the phrase, ___ days and a wake-up when describing the imminent end of his or her service commitment or an approaching transfer.  Of course, unless it leads to retirement, a new commitment of some sort picks up where the prior left off.  And so it is with our Cross Country teams this fall.  10 days and a wake-up.  Either you'll be transitioning from summer training OR beginning the adventure that gets under way August 23rd at 2:30.  At this point, I'm fairly familiar with the group that has been working hard all summer running, working out, stopping in to Core @ 4.  I'm sincerely hoping others will be prepared to make the same commitment come our first practice.  You'll often hear me say that XC is a no-cut sport and that all are welcome regardless of ability or experience.  And this remains true.  I've often had a newcomer to running show up the first day of practice, push through warmup, walk within 400 meters of a slow, easy run, and show signs of exhaustion within 10 minutes of the start of practice.  While it is rare that this runner (or group of runners) makes an enormous impact on the success of the team within their initial 2.5 month season, they often get hooked on running, improve over time, and become very valuable members of the team in later years.  I don't discourage anybody from starting and trying.  Especially those who have never participated in distance running.  There is a place for you on this team if you're willing to make the effort.  In a previous blog entry I described the culture of this team as one of ENCOURAGEMENT.  I assure you that you'll be encouraged by me, our dedicated and knowledgeable Assistants, our experienced Captains and every other member of your team.  You'll feel welcome from Day 1.  The reward may be lifelong friends and an incredibly healthy lifestyle.  I've had the good fortune of experiencing both and feel blessed to have done so.

10 days and a wake-up.  There is much that can be accomplished within that time span.  Those of you who have not yet registered for the team can do so.  You have ample opportunity to have your physical exam updated.  You can make provisions for user fees.  You can put together what you'll need for day 1 of practice (dri-fit shirt or singlet; lightweight running shorts; clean, dry, white socks; a good pair of running shoes that fit properly.)  No sticks, balls, helmets or mouth guards.  Just pretty basic equipment and a willingness to commit along with the desire to succeed.  You'll be encouraged (literally) every step of the way.  Failure, for all intents and purposes, is impossible.

Veterans, continue recruiting.  Newcomers, begin preparation.  But everybody . . . get ready.  It's going to be a great ride!  I know I say it every year, and this one is no different.  I can't recall ever being more excited coming into a season.  We have some incredible talent along with some extremely competitive opponents within the always tough Patriot League.

10 days and a wake-up.  I'm ready to jump out my Asics.  Can't wait to get under way.  You?
