Sportsmanship; September 24, 2015

In a previous entry I alluded to "details to follow" relative to sportsmanship and our teams.  If there are lessons I've learned over the years they include "think before you speak" and to "never communicate while angry."  Letting some time pass before speaking your mind allows you to put your thoughts into perspective, get the facts straight, and avoid saying something you can't take back.  That said . . . In the past week we had the opportunity to compete in the Amherst Invitational and in a dual meet versus Silver Lake.  Both were very competitive meets.  Sometimes competition brings out the worst in people.  But rather than point the finger at any particular athlete/team, I think I can make my point by listing some of the things you will never see Whitman-Hanson athletes do during a Cross Country meet:

1.  None of our runners will intentionally push an opponent standing next to him/her at the starting line when the gun goes off.

2.  None of our runners will intentionally interfere with another runner attempting to pass.

3.  None of our runners will ignore an opponent who specifically asks for directions on a course.

4.  None of our runners will intentionally allow an opponent to veer off the course without making a sincere effort to re-direct him/her to the correct route.

One of the highlights for the season for me thus far is a comment by one of our parents who, in an e-mail, expressed that she was particularly impressed by the sportsmanship displayed by our teams at home meets.  I agree and acknowledge that this is the behavior I have come to expect from every member of our team at every opportunity.  Simply stated, you're a great group of kids!  Thank you!

PRACTICE today:  Warmup, 4 X 1200 at I (Interval) pace, Cooldown, Stretch

The goal is for BOTH groups to complete the workout!  See you at 2:30.
