Wednesday - March 23, 2016

Welcome back!  It was wonderful seeing so many of you return for our Spring season at yesterday's practice.  I was happy with the overall numbers of athletes, but even more heartened by the numbers of distance runners.  As you might have expected, I will be the event coach for Mid-Distance and Distance runners.  Yesterday's workout of a long slow distance run is traditionally and necessarily what we do during the first few days of practice.  While many of you maintain your regimen during the off-season, not all of you do.  Some of you therefore will experience some discomfort during the first week of practice.  We will be taking things up a notch quickly however.  Not today though.  For the distance crew it will be similar to yesterday, with a 40 minute, easy run for all, followed by strides and stretching.  Field event training will follow for those who will be participating in those events (all the Girls.).  Core training for those who neither throw or jump.

I really hope many of you take advantage of your opportunity to participate in multiple events.  Each athlete can participate in 2 running events and 2 field events.  Boys and Girls compete separately (except the 2 Mile on occasion.) and running events and field events are clustered together by gender.  This means if you don't participate in a Field event, you will be helping out with measuring, timing, scoring, etc.  I know what my preference would be.  I'd compete.

Remember to encourage your friends and classmates to join track if they aren't selected for another sport or want to go in another direction.  The more the merrier.  See you at 2:20 on the track.
